Wenn das noch gelingt – ein sensibles Drama mit Empathie und Humor, mit Akzeptanz, Toleranz und Einsicht in die unausweichliche Dramatik der Realität einzubetten – dazu mit zwei Schauspielern, die sich auf dem Spiegelparkett der Anforderungen sicher zu bewegen wissen, die vor der Gefahr des Ausgleitens rechtzeitig innehalten, das Tempo dort verlangsamen, wo Besinnung nötig ist und die Zügel lockern, um die Spannung der Entwicklung zu gewähren – dann kann man schon mal von einem beglückenden Zusammenspiel sprechen.
Die Welt der Bühne hat stets ihre Lieblinge, ihre Protagonisten, die ihr Publikum begeistern und dafür mit Treue belohnt werden, selbst wenn sich ein intimes Boulevardtheater jäh in einem überdimensionalen Theatersaal wie nach dem Auszug der Lindenoper nun im desolaten Schillertheater behaupten muss. Und so spielen sie wieder beinahe jeden Abend das großartige Spiel einer Begegnung zwischen zwei so ungleichen Menschen wie der hübschen jungen Tänzerin Senga Quinn, die jäh durch eine irreparable Knieverletzung nach einem Autounfall körperlich und psychisch gelähmt, sich mit der neuen Realität nicht abfinden will. Und ausgerechnet jetzt bittet sie Ever Montgomery, ein Professor für Geowissenschaften, der zwei Etagen über ihr wohnt, um eine Tanzstunde, um eine Unterweisung in gesellschafltich adäquater Verhaltenstechnik, denn die hatte er als bisher nicht benötigt. Aber jetzt steht eine große Ehrung für den Professor an: Er muss eine Rede halten, sich sich auf dem Parkett mit einer fremden weiblichen Person bewegen und Konversation führen, die außerhalb seines Fachgebiets liegt.
Unmöglich, denn dieser Mann leidet unter dem Asperger Syndrom, einer speziellen Form von Autismus. Unmöglich, wie es Senga nach den ersten Schritten konstatiert, diesem Mann, der jeglichen Körperkontakt scheut wie der Teufel das Weihwasser, auch nur annähernd Rhythmus und Einfühlsamkeit in den Parnter zu lehren. Aber weil sich Ever in seiner befremdlichen, ehrlich-nativen Art nicht aufhalten läßt, sein Begehren durchzusetzen und immer wieder gegen die Mauer, die Senga um sich errichtet hat, anstürmt, finden dies ungleiche Paar nach und nach Möglichkeiten der Annäherung und des Verständnisses füreinander. Dafür hat der Autor wunderbare, verwirrend witzige wie ernsthafte und nachdenkliche Dialoge geschrieben, die die Beiden über den Austausch gemeinsamer Interessen zueinander führen. Eine Lebenshilfe der ganz besonderen Art.
Im großzügig ausgerichteten Apartement von Senga, dessen Glasfronten den Blick auf die kühlen Hochhausfassaden New Yorks freigeben, und in dem die Musik zu jeder Stimmungslage natürlich passend eingetippt wird, spielt sich eigentlich ein Drama ab, das kaum zu ertragen wäre, wenn nicht, s.o. der Autor die Entwicklung der Offenbarung von Eves retardiertem Verhalten und der angstvollen Wirklichkeitsverneinung Sengas so sorgsam, doch stets unsentimental, voller Respekt für den anderen vorantreiben würde.
Eves Hartnäckigkeit, seine Art, wie er pragmatisch Sengas utopische Hoffnung, eines Tages wieder tanzen zu können, mit der Realität konfrontiert, wie er sich ihrem Verlust verständnisvoll nähert, indem er Filme aus ihrer tänzerischer Karrierezeit anschaut, wie er sich in oft schmerzhaftem Prozess dazu durchringt, ganz langsam, ganz vorsichtig mit ihren Anforderungen Schritt zu halten – das verlangt schauspielerisch eine intensive Beschäftigung mit der “Anomalie” und psychischen Befindlichkeit dieser Menschen. Also immer langer anerkennender Beifall für Oliver Mommsen und Tanja Wedhorn! Denn wie ihre Senga die Fähigkeit entwickelt, der ungelenken, angstvollen, eingegrenzten Persönlichkeit Evers ein besseres Selbstbewußtsein und Hoffnung auf eine weniger absolute Zwanghaftigkeit zu geben, das verleiht auch ihr ein neues Lebensgefühl. Als ihr die mutige Neuorientierung von Ever bewußt wird, begreift sie, das auch sie selbst Veränderungen für sich akzeptieren kann. Eine solche Komposition ist die Kunst ganz besonderer Broadway-Autoren und einer Regieführung, die die Möglichkeiten humanen Miteinanders unter den zu oft in den Vordergrund gestellten Egoismus der Zeit freilegen können.
