Strindbergs Kammerspiel, das in einer schwedischen Mittsommernacht auf einem ländlichen Gut die Tochter des Grafen, Julie, und den Kammerdiener ihres Vater, Jean, zusammenführt, baut sich in Torsten Fischers explosiv geladener Inszenierung wie ein Tsunami auf. Elfenhaft leicht und grazil schwebt die verführerisch schöne, unerreichbare Julie auf dem Sims der angedeuteten weißen Schloßwand herbei, im schwarzen Spitzenkleid die Peitsche führend, – und robust, selbstbewußt bis zur Überheblichkeit lästert der lüsterne Kammerdiener des Grafen, Jean – der sich von seiner unsichtbar bleibenden Verlobten Christin aus der Küche edlen Wein aus dem herrschaftlichen Keller reichen läßt, über die Vertreibung von Julies Verlobten und den Domina- Klatsch der Diener. Schwarz und Weiß sind die dominanten Farben – Sinnbild und Symbol, kühl und seelenlos.
Wohl weiss der Diener um die extravagante Lebensart der jungen Herrin, aber er sieht sie zunächst nur fern wie ein Phantom, das dann jäh bedrohlich körpernah heranglitzert. Eng umspielt das Kleid die schmale Figur, die sich tänzelnd biegt und beugt und Jean umflirrt und umflirtet. Es ist Mittsommer, eine Nacht, die der Freiheit, dem Leben und der Liebe gehört, und in der alle Grenzen gesprengt werden könnten.
Was den noch zögerlichen Jean in seiner Standfestigkeit schließlich umwirft, ist nach einem geschliffenem Wortgefecht um die Dominanz der Positionen letztlich beider Geständnis ihrer Einsamkeit, die Schmach um Jeans Herkunft aus kinderreicher, armer Familie wie die Vernachlässigung Julies, deren Mutter nicht nur herrisch und wahnsinnig war, sondern sich auch ohne jede Verantwortung für die Tochter mit Liebhaber und Vermögen davonmachte, den Grafen ebenso einsam und verbittert zurücklassend wie das Kind. Jean ist und bleibt immer der Unterklassige, eines von 10 Kindern einfacher Leute, der schon als Junge das hübsche gräfliche Mädchen von weitem bewunderte, beneidete und begehrte bis er langsam den Grad eines herrschafltichen Dieners erklomm, Während Julie davon träumte, aus der Höhe der Unerreichbarkeit auf die Erde herabzufallen, Wärme und Festigkeit zu spüren. Mensch unter Menschen zu sein. Ein Traum, den Jean ihr gern erfüllt.
Dieses von Anfang an hochgespielte, explosive Liebeswahnspiel gestalten Judith Rosmair mit den bereits aufgezählten Attributen und Dominique Horwitz, variabel und fein wie grob nunanciert, eindringlich, verstörend und mit explosiver Kraft. Da ist kein Platz für Zärtlichkeit, allein ein starkes erotisches Begehren erfüllt die Atmosphäre, ein in der langen, hellen, mystischen Nacht und von der unbändigen Kraft der Natur getriebenes Feuer, das intensiv lodert, um dann rasch zu verlöschen – weil es keine Liebe, kein Verstehen, keine wirkliche Zukunft kennt; der alltägliche, tief und fest verankerte Pragmatismus der Menschen gewinnt bei Tageslicht wieder die Oberhand. Die beängstigend agressive Selbstsucht der Höheren Tochter und die feindliche Hilflosigkeit des unterlegenen Mannes schleudern ihre Pfeile wie brennende Blitze in die Seele des Anderen. Aber die Rollen werden vertauscht, die Unterlegene gewinnt wieder ihre Herkunftsposition, und der Erniedrigte befreit sich mit der Gewalt des archaischen Kriegers aus der Unterwerfung. Neue Hoffnung keimt auf, am Horizont winkt eine gemeinsame Flucht in die Schweiz mit einem Hotel, Christin als Köchin und Julie an der Kasse, nun Jean als Herr im Haus. Den Tresor hat Julie schon vorhersehend geplündert. Doch alles zerplatzt, alles ist vorbei, das Spiel ist aus. Das in Auswegslosigkeit aneinander gefesselte Paar wird nicht mehr fliehen können. Der Graf steht vor der Tür. Die Geldscheine flattern gleich dem Herbstlaub auf die Erde, Rotwein und Blut hinterlassen und prophezeien tödliche Spuren, die Menschen werden wieder in ihre eigene Umlaufbahn zurückgeschleudert.
